Cuando describimos algo que ha pasado, a veces reproducimos lo que alguien ha dicho o escrito. Esto puede pasar en muchas situaciones diarias: en conversaciones informales, en reuniones de trabajo, en llamadas telefónicas, en correos electrónicos, etc. Y cuando necesitamos explicar lo que otra persona ha dicho, podemos utilizar dos tipos de estilos discursivos: el estilo directo (direct speech) y el estilo indirecto (indirect speech o reported speech).

En este artículo te explicamos en qué consiste cada estilo, cuándo debes utilizarlos, y cómo se forman en inglés, centrándonos sobre todo en el estilo indirecto o reported speech. Para utilizar estos estilos discursivos correctamente, necesitarás tener cierto dominio de los tiempos verbales en inglés, así que esta lección te servirá de recordatorio de los verbos que has estudiado, incluyendo verbos modales.
CUÁNDO USAR EL REPORTED SPEECH EN INGLÉS
Antes de empezar a estudiar el estilo indirecto o reported speech, es conveniente que entiendas qué es el estilo directo. El estilo directo consiste en replicar lo que otra persona ha dicho con sus palabras exactas. Por ejemplo:
- Juan said, ‘I need a holiday!’ ➡️ Juan dijo: “¡Necesito unas vacaciones!”.
- She asked me, ‘What is your name?’ ➡️ Ella me preguntó: “¿Cómo te llamas?”.
Como puedes ver, el estilo directo es muy fácil de utilizar; solo tienes que repetir las palabras que oíste, una por una.
La segunda opción que tenemos cuando queremos describir lo que otra persona ha dicho es el estilo indirecto o reported speech, en inglés. Utilizamos el estilo indirecto o reported speech para explicar lo que alguien ha dicho sin utilizar sus palabras exactas. Para que lo entiendas mejor, vamos a convertir los ejemplos anteriores, en estilo directo, en frases en estilo indirecto:

REGLAS PARA UTILIZAR EL REPORTED SPEECH EN INGLÉS
El estilo indirecto o reported speech en inglés no es tan sencillo de utilizar como el estilo directo porque en el primero los tiempos verbales cambian. Fíjate en estos ejemplos.
